Electrical Distribution Line Mechanic

An excellent opportunity is available for experienced Distribution Line Mechanics to join a growing electrical infrastructure contractor in the Canterbury region. This permanent full-time position offers the chance to work on a diverse range of electrical distribution projects across residential, commercial, and utility networks while contributing to critical infrastructure development and maintenance.

The successful candidates will be responsible for overhead and underground distribution construction, network maintenance, fault response, switching operations, and electrical infrastructure installations. This role is suited to qualified professionals who are committed to safety, quality workmanship, and delivering reliable network services.

• Construct and maintain overhead electrical distribution networks
• Carry out overhead to underground network conversion projects
• Perform low-voltage underground construction works
• Install and maintain supply fuse networks
• Undertake network switching and testing activities
• Install and maintain streetlighting systems
• Install distribution boxes, kiosks, and transformers
• Respond to electrical faults and emergency restoration work
• Conduct inspections and maintenance of distribution assets
• Work safely within live electrical network environments
• Operate tools, plant, and equipment associated with line construction activities
• Ensure compliance with electrical industry standards and regulations
• Complete required documentation and reporting accurately
• Participate in planned maintenance and infrastructure upgrade projects
• Work independently and collaboratively within project teams
• Maintain a strong commitment to workplace health and safety
• Support continuous improvement and operational efficiency initiatives
• Provide high-quality workmanship across all assigned tasks

• New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Supply (Line Mechanic) Level 4 or equivalent recognised qualification
• Current New Zealand Electrical Registration and Practising Licence or ability to obtain registration
• Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems and network operations
• Understanding of electrical safety procedures and industry regulations
• Minimum 2 years of post-qualification experience as a Distribution Line Mechanic preferred
• Class 2 New Zealand Driver Licence or equivalent
• Class 4 Driver Licence advantageous
• Experience with overhead line construction and maintenance
• Experience with underground distribution network construction
• Experience with network switching and fault response activities
• Ability to work safely in live electrical environments
• Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Excellent communication and organisational skills
