Fitter Welder

An established engineering and fabrication business in Canterbury, New Zealand is seeking an experienced Fitter-Welder to join its workshop team. This is a hands-on role suited to a tradesperson who can confidently take a project from fabrication and fit-up through to a quality-finished result.

The work covers custom truck decks, crane installations, trailers, transport repairs and general engineering projects, meaning every project brings a different technical challenge. Candidates with strong practical experience, sound welding skills and the ability to interpret drawings—or solve fabrication requirements independently on the workshop floor—will be well suited to the position.

• Fabricate and fit custom truck decks and associated components
• Complete crane fit-outs and structural fabrication work
• Carry out MIG and TIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium
• Perform accurate fit-up, assembly and fabrication according to project requirements
• Interpret engineering drawings and workshop specifications where provided
• Measure, cut, prepare and assemble fabricated components accurately
• Complete transport and truck-body repair work to required standards
• Manage fast-turnaround repair and fabrication projects efficiently
• Carry out general engineering and workshop fabrication tasks
• Maintain high standards of workmanship, accuracy and attention to detail
• Ensure completed work meets applicable certification and engineering requirements
• Work alongside certified engineers on projects requiring inspection and sign-off
• Follow workshop safety procedures and maintain a clean and organised work area

• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience as a Fitter-Welder, Fabricator or similar trade professional
• Strong practical experience with MIG and TIG welding
• Ability to weld mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium/alloy
• Proven ability to complete fabrication, fitting and assembly work
• Ability to interpret technical or engineering drawings
• Strong practical problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently
• High attention to accuracy, workmanship and safety
• Experience in transport, truck-body fabrication or heavy vehicle work is advantageous
• Relevant welding tickets or certifications are advantageous but not essential
• Willingness to obtain relevant welding certifications where required
• Ability to work effectively as part of a small, hands-on engineering team
