Fitter Welder / Fabricator

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Fitter Welder / Fabricator to join a well-established heavy engineering workshop in Canterbury, New Zealand. This permanent, full-time position offers the chance to work on a diverse range of custom heavy transport and structural fabrication projects within a modern, well-equipped workshop.

You will be involved in the fabrication, assembly, modification, and repair of heavy transport equipment, custom truck bodies, chassis components, and structural steel, delivering work to the highest engineering and safety standards. This role is ideal for a highly skilled tradesperson who can work independently, mentor others, and take pride in producing quality workmanship.

• Fabricate, assemble, and modify heavy transport components and structural steel
• Carry out custom chassis alterations and commercial vehicle body fabrication
• Perform high-quality MIG and stick welding on heavy-gauge materials
• Interpret and work independently from detailed engineering drawings and fabrication blueprints
• Operate workshop machinery including CNC plasma cutters, band saws, and fabrication equipment
• Ensure all fabrication work meets New Zealand engineering and transport standards
• Maintain high levels of workmanship, accuracy, and attention to detail
• Follow workplace health and safety procedures at all times
• Assist with mentoring and supporting less experienced workshop staff where required

• Minimum 5 years' experience as a Fitter Welder or Heavy Fabricator
• Strong experience in heavy-gauge MIG welding
• Proven ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision
• Experience in heavy transport engineering or chassis modifications is advantageous
• Relevant engineering or fabrication trade qualification preferred
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
• Commitment to workplace health and safety standards
• Available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with overtime opportunities
