Marine Technician

A well-established marine service business in New Zealand is seeking experienced Marine Technicians / Outboard Motor Mechanics to join its skilled team on a full-time, permanent basis. The role offers a minimum of 40 guaranteed hours per week and provides the opportunity to work across a broad range of marine engines, mechanical systems, electrical systems and marine equipment.

This is a hands-on position suited to technicians who are confident diagnosing faults, performing servicing and repairs, and working independently while maintaining high standards of safety and workmanship. Experience with Mercury outboards, MerCruiser, SmartCraft, DTS and computerised marine diagnostics is highly valued.

• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling-system faults in outboard and marine engines
• Service, maintain, test and repair petrol outboard engines and other marine engines
• Dismantle, inspect, repair and reassemble engines and mechanical components
• Repair or replace worn or defective engine and drive components
• Carry out scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance
• Perform engine tune-ups and general mechanical repairs
• Use computerised diagnostic equipment and manufacturer software to identify faults
• Diagnose and repair marine starting, charging and electrical systems
• Service and repair MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard systems when required
• Install and configure outboard engines, controls, gauges and wiring
• Install marine electronics, accessories and associated equipment
• Conduct pre-delivery inspections and engine commissioning
• Carry out sea trials and performance testing
• Provide mobile servicing and repair services at customer locations when required
• Maintain accurate service records and job documentation
• Follow workshop safety procedures and manufacturer specifications
• Deliver high-quality workmanship and complete repairs efficiently
• Work collaboratively with other technicians and workshop staff

• Relevant NZQF Level 4 trade qualification or equivalent overseas qualification
• At least 3 years of relevant experience servicing, diagnosing and repairing internal-combustion engines
• Demonstrated experience working with outboard or marine engines
• Strong experience in engine fault diagnosis and troubleshooting
• Practical experience in engine servicing, repair and component replacement
• Ability to dismantle, inspect and correctly reassemble mechanical components
• Experience with marine electrical systems is highly regarded
• Experience with Mercury outboards and MerCruiser systems is highly valued
• Experience with SmartCraft and DTS systems is an advantage
• Experience using computerised marine diagnostic equipment is preferred
• Mercury manufacturer training or certification is an advantage
• Ability to read and follow manufacturer service manuals and technical specifications
• Ability to work safely and independently
• Ability to work effectively as part of an experienced technical team
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
• Full driver’s licence is preferred
• Must meet applicable New Zealand employment and immigration requirements
