Workshop technician

A verified engineering and metal fabrication employer in Australia is seeking an experienced Fitter & CNC Machine Operator to join its workshop team.

This is a hands-on, workshop-based opportunity for a capable all-rounder who can take responsibility for jobs from engineering drawings through to fabrication, fitting, assembly and preparation for installation. You will work with CNC and general fabrication machinery while helping coordinate workflow and ensure completed components are accurate and ready for site teams.

This role is ideal for an experienced tradesperson who can work independently, manage priorities and contribute across multiple stages of the fabrication process. Most work will be workshop-based, with occasional site installation and fitting duties when required.

• Read and independently interpret engineering and fabrication drawings
• Determine dimensions, tolerances, materials, fabrication requirements and assembly details
• Operate CNC and general fabrication machinery safely and efficiently
• Complete accurate fitting, fabrication and assembly work
• Carry out basic MIG and TIG welding where required
• Measure, inspect and check finished components against engineering drawings
• Prepare fabricated items, materials, fasteners and components for site installation
• Coordinate workshop jobs and daily production priorities
• Ensure completed work is ready for site and installation teams
• Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment
• Maintain and care for workshop machinery, tools and equipment
• Identify and resolve or report drawing and fabrication issues before production
• Work effectively with fabricators, welders and installation teams
• Attend sites occasionally to assist with installation and fitting work

• previous experience as a Fitter, CNC Machine Operator, Metal Fabricator or similar engineering tradesperson
• Strong ability to independently read and interpret engineering drawings
• Demonstrated experience operating CNC machinery
• Excellent fitting, assembly and fabrication skills
• Good understanding of fabrication processes and production sequencing
• Basic MIG and TIG welding capability
• Strong measuring, accuracy and quality-checking skills
• Ability to use common engineering tools and fabrication equipment
• Experience taking responsibility for jobs from drawings through to completion
• Strong organisational and time-management skills
• Practical problem-solving ability
• Good understanding of workplace health and safety
• Ability to work independently and as part of a workshop and installation team
• Experience with CNC laser cutting, tube laser cutting, CNC press brakes, drilling, grinding or similar equipment will be highly regarded
• Availability to commence immediately or at short notice
